Morning Coffee - Timing it Right for Optimal Alertness

Many people drink coffee first thing in the morning to wake up, but experts suggest waiting about an hour after waking up might be more beneficial. According to researchers, caffeine blocks adenosine, a neurotransmitter that promotes sleepiness, which is at its lowest level in the morning. Additionally, the body's natural cortisol levels peak about 30-60 minutes after waking, helping to naturally increase alertness. Drinking coffee during this initial wake period may not be as effective and could lead to increased tolerance over time. Experts recommend having coffee when cortisol levels begin to dip, typically mid-to-late morning, to combat the midday energy slump effectively. They also advise against consuming coffee too close to bedtime, as it can interfere with sleep.
