Australian researchers have discovered a groundbreaking use for coffee waste. By processing charred coffee grounds, they can produce concrete that's 30% stronger. This innovation could resolve both waste disposal and resource scarcity issues. Coffee waste, usually ending up in landfills, emits harmful greenhouse gases. Meanwhile, the construction industry's demand for sand is harming the environment. Heating coffee grounds at 350°C without oxygen produces biochar, which strengthens concrete. The team is still testing the long-term durability of this coffee-cement hybrid. They're also exploring biochars from other organic wastes, aiming for sustainable solutions.
