Thousand Hills Coffee, founded by Julia and Sim Ngezahayo, aims to revive the Rwandan coffee industry while sharing its unique flavors with the world. After Sim lost his job as an interpreter in 2020, the couple decided to turn their love for Rwandan coffee into a business. With Sim's connections in his homeland, they began importing coffee beans directly from Rwandan farmers and roasting them in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The business not only provides high-quality coffee but also supports Rwandan coffee farmers who have struggled since the 1994 Tutsi genocide. Sim, who grew up farming coffee in Rwanda, sees this venture as a way to give back to his community and encourage the continuation of coffee farming. The coffee's distinct flavor, influenced by Rwanda's unique soil, offers consumers a taste of the "land of 1,000 hills." Thousand Hills Coffee offers a monthly subscription service and sells from Fromagerie Bothwell in Winnipeg.
