The Rising Cost of Coffee - From 2004 to 2024

In 2004, a cup of coffee could be bought for as low as $2.15 on average, with Starbucks charging $1.50 for a tall house blend. Fast forward to 2024, and the average price of a regular coffee has climbed to $3.08, according to data from Toast, a restaurant management system. The cost varies significantly across the U.S., with the most expensive coffee found in Hawaii at nearly $5, followed by California at $3.88. Nebraska offers the lowest average price at $2.12. Specialty coffees like cold brews and lattes also show significant price differences. Cold brews in Hawaii can cost around $6.29, while the cheapest are found in West Virginia at $4.61. For lattes, Hawaii and Alaska top the charts with prices above $6, whereas Kansas offers more affordable options. The high costs in Hawaii and Alaska are attributed to their remoteness. Meanwhile, Starbucks has introduced a value menu to attract budget-conscious customers, starting at $5 for a combo of coffee and a croissant.
