Bourbon Pointu, an Arabica coffee from Réunion, a French island near Madagascar, fetches up to 500 Euros per kilo due to its rarity and unique flavor. It is a genetic mutation of early Arabica, adapted to the island's volcanic soil, which makes it naturally low in caffeine and susceptible to diseases, resulting in low yields. After nearly vanishing, Bourbon Pointu's cultivation has been revived, with around 50 producers on the island. The coffee is praised for its complex, fruity flavor without sourness, despite the acidic soil. It won eight awards at the 2023 World Coffee Challenge, and while mostly sold to Japan, it can be tasted at select farms on Réunion or specialty coffee events in Japan.
