Texas A&M University has introduced a new standalone Coffee Processing and Quality Certificate to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals in the burgeoning specialty coffee industry. The program, offered through the Department of Food Science and Technology, is designed for undergraduates but is available to all Texas A&M students. It provides comprehensive coursework on coffee production, processing, quality evaluation, and the health benefits associated with coffee. The certification also emphasizes the significance of sustainable coffee practices and includes opportunities for internships and study-abroad programs, such as an immersive trip to Costa Rica. This program aims to equip students with the required expertise to excel in various roles within the coffee industry, from cultivation to café management. As the only academic title in coffee offered by a U.S. university, the certification is equivalent to a minor and involves 15 semester hours of study. Texas A&M hopes this initiative will support the coffee industry and foster a new generation of agricultural leaders.
