Spring onion coffee, a bizarre blend of iced coffee with milk and heaps of chopped spring onions, has recently taken social media by storm. Despite its popularity, it hasn't won over many fans. Coffee expert Mathew Woodburn-Simmonds, from Home Coffee Expert, expressed his bewilderment at the trend. He notes that while the crunch and sharpness of spring onions might offer some contrast to a heavily creamed coffee, he ultimately believes that adding unpleasant elements to an already unpleasant drink doesn't improve it. This trend, originating from China's "dark cuisine" movement, exemplifies the extreme lengths people will go to for social media content. Woodburn-Simmonds strongly advises against adding onions or any vegetables to coffee, though he concedes that a sweet vegetable puree, like caramelized red onion espuma, might work. He also mentions ube, a root vegetable that adds natural sweetness to coffee, as a more palatable option. In conclusion, while spring onion coffee might be trending, its appeal seems more about shock value than genuine enjoyment.
