Scam Alert - Coffee Shop Employee Falls Victim to IRS Phone Scam

This week, a local Biggby Coffee employee in Chesterton fell prey to a cunning phone scam, losing an undisclosed amount of money to a fraudster claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service. The scammer, posing as "Jamie King," convinced the employee that the store was under audit due to counterfeit bills and instructed them to count the cash in each register, purchase cash cards, and mail them to the Department of the Treasury in Texas. The employee, unfortunately, followed the instructions, providing the scammer with access to the cash card codes. This incident serves as a stark reminder to be vigilant and skeptical of unsolicited calls, especially those claiming to be from government agencies. It's crucial to verify the authenticity of such calls and never provide sensitive information or send money to unknown individuals.
