New Era for Coffee Education - SCA and CQI Join Forces

A significant partnership was announced at the Specialty Coffee Expo in Houston, Texas, between the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) and the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI). This collaboration aims to enhance coffee assessment and education while ensuring ongoing support for CQI’s vital projects. Starting October 1, 2025, SCA will take over the management of the Q Grader Program, introducing a new curriculum based on the Coffee Value Assessment (CVA). This assessment evaluates not only the coffee's quality but also its origin, processing methods, and sustainability efforts.

• The Q Grader Program will now be based on a holistic approach to coffee evaluation.

• Current Q Graders can update their licenses through a fast-tracked course by the end of 2025.

• SCA will contribute a portion of its educational revenue to support CQI’s research and development.

• This partnership highlights the commitment to improving the lives of coffee producers and the quality of coffee.

This collaboration is crucial as it addresses the need for sustainable development in the coffee sector. With traditional funding sources dwindling, SCA's financial support will allow CQI to continue its essential work, benefiting coffee producers worldwide. The partnership not only aims to improve coffee quality but also ensures that the livelihoods of those who grow coffee are prioritized.
