RMIT researchers are brewing up a storm by converting used coffee grounds into biochar. This eco-friendly material strengthens concrete and reduces its environmental impact. Concrete production is a significant source of greenhouse gases, but biochar can replace up to 15% of the sand used in concrete, making it 30% stronger. This innovation means less cement is needed, cutting emissions further. With Australia producing 75,000 tonnes of coffee waste annually, this could replace 675,000 tonnes of sand in concrete. By diverting organic waste from landfills, RMIT's solution tackles both waste management and carbon emissions. It's a win-win for sustainability.
