Messenger Coffee Co. Closes One Location Amid Plaza Changes

A popular Kansas City coffee shop, Messenger Coffee Co., has closed one of its two locations on the Country Club Plaza. The closure comes as part of a consolidation strategy, as the lease for the 318 W. 47th St. location expired. The remaining location at 4771 Jefferson St. will continue to serve customers. Messenger had previously taken over the Plaza spots in 2021, replacing Kaldi’s Coffee. The company also owns other local businesses, including Black Dog Coffeehouse and The Roasterie.

• The Country Club Plaza has seen several store closures this year, including Hallmark Gold Crown and Forever 21.

• HP Village Partners recently purchased the Plaza and plans to invest $100 million in upgrades.

• The focus will be on local restaurants to fill empty spaces and improve the shopping experience.

• Messenger hopes to maintain its customer base at the remaining location.

This shift highlights the changing landscape of retail in the Plaza. With multiple closures, the area is adapting to attract new businesses and improve its offerings. The emphasis on local food operators may enhance the community feel and draw more visitors to the area.
