Mavis Bank Coffee Factory Invests $100M in Eco-Friendly Wastewater Solution

Mavis Bank Coffee Factory (MBCF) is investing $100 million to enhance its wastewater treatment facilities, aiming to meet global environmental standards and attract eco-conscious buyers, particularly in Europe. The upgraded facility is expected to yield returns within five years through incremental growth in new markets. The factory, located in St Andrew, Jamaica, has secured the necessary permits from the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) and will collaborate with the Scientific Research Council (SRC) for technical guidance and implementation. The new system will include a reed bed, chlorination chamber, and soak-away chamber to ensure compliance with NEPA standards. MBCF’s commitment to sustainability aligns with its strategy to boost export growth and profitability. Despite past issues with waste management, the factory is now focused on reducing its environmental impact. MBCF is Jamaica’s second-largest coffee exporter, contributing to the country’s coffee sector, which earned approximately US$26 million in 2022. The company aims to leverage its premium brand reputation to maintain high market prices despite sector challenges.
