Genetics May Be the Key to Your Coffee Habits, UCSD Study Finds

UC San Diego researchers have discovered that coffee consumption may be influenced by our genetic makeup. Analyzing data from over 100,000 individuals through 23andMe, the study identified genetic variants associated with caffeine metabolism, which affect how much coffee people drink. The researchers also compared these findings with data from the UK Biobank, revealing that genetic predispositions to coffee consumption vary between the U.S. and the U.K., highlighting the role of environmental factors. Additionally, the study found genetic links between coffee consumption and the use of alcohol, nicotine, and other drugs, suggesting that shared genetic factors influence these behaviors. However, the researchers caution that this does not imply causation, but rather a genetic inclination towards these choices. The study also noted correlations between coffee consumption and mental health conditions like anxiety and depression, although further research is needed to understand these relationships fully. Ultimately, whether you’re a coffee enthusiast or not, your coffee habits could be partly written in your DNA.
