Decaffeinated coffee, a popular alternative for those avoiding caffeine, is under scrutiny due to health concerns associated with methylene chloride, a chemical used in its production. Consumer health advocates are pushing for a ban on this chemical by the FDA, citing its harmful effects, which include damage to the eyes, skin, liver, and heart. This chemical is also utilized in paint strippers and metal cleaners. The National Coffee Association, however, argues that banning methylene chloride would deprive consumers of a safe product linked to reduced cancer risk and other health benefits. According to the association, approximately 26 million people consume decaf coffee daily, predominantly processed using the European Method of Decaffeination, which the industry claims is safe despite the controversy.
