Caffeine consumption is safe up to 400 milligrams daily, which equates to about four to five cups of coffee, as per the FDA. However, exceeding this amount can cause various side effects like insomnia and jitteriness. For those sensitive to caffeine or advised to limit intake, such as pregnant women or individuals on certain medications, cutting back is essential. Decaf coffee, which is processed mainly through the European method using methylene chloride, has raised health concerns despite the FDA's safety assurance of trace amounts in the final product. Alternatives include solvent-free or Swiss Water processed decaf coffees, which might offer a safer option without the potential health risks. Decaf still provides several health benefits similar to regular coffee, such as improved liver health and possible protection against certain diseases, but without the adverse effects of caffeine.
