CoffeeShop Astrophysics - Brewing Science in Milwaukee's Cafes

Every Saturday afternoon, Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, transforms into a hub of scientific curiosity with CoffeeShop Astrophysics. This public engagement program, run by graduate students from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee’s Center for Gravitation, Cosmology, and Astrophysics (CGCA), has been making complex scientific concepts accessible to the community for over a decade. Spearheaded by Gabe Freedman, the program features 45-minute talks on broadly appealing topics, followed by interactive Q&A sessions. The events, which draw 50 to 100 attendees, take place in the cozy confines of Anodyne's cafe, making science less intimidating and more engaging. The program was founded in 2014 by Sydney Chamberlin, who sought a welcoming, off-campus venue to foster inclusivity. Even during the COVID-19 lockdown, the initiative persisted through online sessions. Today, it continues to thrive, driven by the passion and enthusiasm of the student presenters, who benefit from improved communication skills and community connections. The program celebrated its 10-year milestone in April 2024, a testament to its enduring appeal and impact.
