New research reveals that drinking coffee may significantly lower the risk of liver diseases, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. The study, which included over 350,000 participants from the UK Biobank, tracked their health for 13 years. It found that those consuming five or more cups of coffee daily had a much lower chance of developing serious liver issues. The findings suggest that coffee drinkers have healthier liver markers and lower levels of liver fat and inflammation.
• Drinking five or more cups of coffee daily leads to a 32% lower risk of cirrhosis and a 47% lower chance of liver cancer.
• Moderate coffee intake (one to two cups) is still linked to lower risks of liver disease.
• Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee showed similar health benefits.
• Despite these findings, people should not start drinking coffee solely for liver health.
Understanding the link between coffee and liver health is important, especially since liver disease causes millions of deaths each year. While moderate coffee consumption may offer protective benefits, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for overall liver health.
