New research from the University of Galway reveals surprising findings about coffee and stroke risk. While coffee is often praised for its health benefits, excessive consumption may actually increase the risk of stroke, potentially more than sugary drinks and fruit juices. This study is part of the Interstroke project, which analyzed data from nearly 27,000 participants across 27 countries, including individuals who had experienced their first stroke.
• Fizzy drinks and fruit juices were linked to a 22% and 37% increased risk of stroke, respectively.
• Drinking more than four cups of coffee a day also raised the risk by 37%.
• Tea consumption showed a protective effect, with an 18-29% decrease in stroke risk, but adding milk negated these benefits.
• No increased risk was found for coffee consumption below four cups.
Understanding these associations is crucial, especially for those at higher risk for stroke due to conditions like hypertension. Moderation is key, as too much of a good thing can lead to health issues.
