Coffee - The Lifesaver for Desk Workers Trapped in Sedentary Jobs

A new study from Soochow University, published in BMC Public Health, reveals that desk workers who drink coffee regularly have lower mortality rates compared to their non-coffee drinking counterparts. Analyzing data from over 10,000 U.S. adults collected through the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers found that prolonged sitting is linked to a significantly higher risk of chronic diseases and death. Specifically, sitting for eight-plus hours daily increases the risk of all-cause mortality by 46% and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related death by 79%. Conversely, coffee drinkers, particularly those with high consumption, were found to be 33% less likely to die from any cause and over 50% less likely to die from CVD. The study highlights the potential antioxidant benefits of coffee, suggesting that while quitting sedentary office jobs isn't feasible for everyone, incorporating coffee into one's daily routine may mitigate some health risks associated with prolonged sitting.
