Coffee May Lower AFib Risk for Daily Drinkers

A recent study reveals that adults with atrial fibrillation (AFib) who drink caffeinated coffee daily may have a lower risk of experiencing irregular heart rhythms. Conducted as part of the Does Eliminating Coffee Avoid Fibrillation (DECAF) trial, the research involved 200 participants who were monitored for six months after cardioversion therapy. Half of the group continued their coffee consumption, while the other half avoided caffeine entirely. The results showed that coffee drinkers had a 39% lower chance of recurring AFib episodes compared to those who abstained from caffeine.

• Participants who drank coffee reported a 47% recurrence of AFib, while 64% in the no-caffeine group experienced episodes.

• The study focused on those who already consumed coffee, suggesting future research could explore effects on new coffee drinkers.

• Results may not apply to those who consume higher amounts of caffeine or energy drinks.

Understanding the relationship between caffeine and AFib is crucial as millions are affected by this condition. Encouraging moderate coffee consumption could offer a simple lifestyle change for patients to manage their heart health more effectively.
