Many people enjoy coffee daily, but few know what might be lurking in their cup. A recent study by the Clean Label Project examined 57 popular coffee products from 45 brands to reveal potential contaminants. The findings highlight the importance of knowing what’s in your coffee and making informed choices for a cleaner brew.
• Researchers conducted over 7,000 tests for harmful substances in coffee, including heavy metals, pesticides, and acrylamide.
• Glyphosate was found in only two samples, but AMPA, a breakdown product, was present in 72% of the coffees tested, including all organic options.
• Acrylamide was detected in every sample, with medium roasts showing the highest levels.
• Phthalates, which can disrupt hormones, were found in 70% of the samples, particularly in canned and pod coffee.
Understanding what’s in coffee matters because it affects health and well-being. While some contaminants are unavoidable, consumers can choose safer options by selecting light or dark roasts and avoiding certain packaging types. This awareness can lead to healthier coffee choices and encourage brands to improve product safety.
