Feeling groggy in the morning, you might be tempted to reach for a cup of coffee, but what if an apple could do the job just as well? According to nutritionist Rob Hobson, coffee is more effective for an immediate mental boost because it stimulates the central nervous system by blocking adenosine, a neurotransmitter that makes us feel sleepy. This stimulation doesn’t come from calories, but from caffeine's effect on the brain. On the other hand, an apple provides a slower release of energy due to its fiber and sugar content, making it a more sustainable option but not as rapidly effective as coffee. Consuming coffee too close to bedtime can interfere with sleep due to its long half-life, but moderate consumption has benefits, like reducing the risk of dementia and type 2 diabetes. For optimal results, it is recommended to start the day with an apple and consume coffee 90 minutes after waking to balance immediate alertness with sustained energy.
