California's Coffee Revolution - A Local Brew Blooms

California's coffee scene is experiencing a unique transformation as local farmers, led by Jay Ruskey of Frinj Coffee, are successfully cultivating coffee in the state's non-tropical climate. With over 100,000 trees planted across Southern California, the region is now producing high-quality coffee that is gaining international attention and renown. Frinj Coffee, headquartered at Good Land Organics in Goleta, is pioneering the growth of 14 coffee varieties on more than 65 farms. The endeavor involves innovative practices like multilayer farming and efficient water use. The coffee has already made its mark, with tastings by coffee connoisseurs and representation at prestigious competitions like the U.S. Brewers Cup. California coffee, especially the distinguished Gesha variety, is set to significantly increase its yield by summer 2024, promising a bright future for this burgeoning industry.
