Bitty & Beau’s Coffee - Brewing Equality One Cup at a Time

Bitty & Beau’s Coffee, founded by Ben and Amy Wright, stands as more than just a coffee shop; it's a symbol of inclusion and opportunity for individuals with special needs. Named after their two disabled children, the Wrights opened the first shop in 2016 in Wilmington, North Carolina, and have since expanded to 20 locations. The latest opened in Columbia, S.C., where they employ 38 disabled individuals. These employees are trained to manage various tasks from greeting guests to making drinks, promoting a work environment where their capabilities are celebrated. Amy Wright emphasizes that this initiative is vital in challenging the high unemployment rates among people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, which is about 80% nationwide. The coffee shop uses unique methods like playing cards for order tracking and integrates fun elements like dance parties to create a joyful and inclusive atmosphere.
