Azores to Test New Brazilian Coffee Varieties in Ambitious Study

The Azores have embarked on an ambitious project to test six new Brazilian Arabica coffee varieties, with the aim of assessing their adaptability and productivity compared to the existing local varieties. This initiative, in partnership with Delta Cafés, involves the production and planting of 6,000 coffee plants on Terceira Island, which will be distributed across experimental fields on multiple Azorean islands. The project, spearheaded by the Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Food and the Association of Azorean Coffee Producers, seeks to enhance the scientific understanding of coffee cultivation in the region. The fields for this experiment were selected by a team of technicians from the Agrarian Development Services of the participating islands. António Ventura, the regional secretary for Agriculture and Food, emphasized that the success of coffee culture in the Azores hinges on producing a differentiated, high-quality product, particularly special coffees. This study aims to leverage scientific knowledge to potentially transform coffee culture in the Azores, enabling the islands to produce unique and exceptional coffee varieties.
