A new sustainability initiative named Avanza Café has been launched to support coffee farmers in Central America. This project, a collaboration between JDE Peet’s and TechnoServe, aims to enhance coffee production while promoting environmentally friendly practices. Funded by a $15.3 million investment from the USDA, Avanza Café will focus on regenerative agriculture techniques in Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua.
• The initiative plans to train over 35,000 small coffee producers in sustainable farming methods.
• It aims to increase coffee yields by 25% and reduce carbon emissions in coffee production.
• The project also seeks to raise household incomes for farmers by an average of 25%.
• This initiative builds on the USDA’s previous MOCCA project, which also focused on coffee and cacao sustainability.
This effort is crucial as Central American coffee farmers face challenges from climate change. By promoting sustainable practices, Avanza Café can help farmers adapt and thrive, ensuring a more resilient coffee industry in the region.
