Brewing Change - Long Miles Coffee's Impact from Burundi to Kenya

Ben and Kristy Carlson founded Long Miles Coffee Project in 2011, aiming to address past injustices in Burundi's coffee industry. By paying higher prices and establishing traceable microlots, they have transformed the lives of over 5,000 smallholder farmers. Recently, they expanded to Western Kenya, partnering with Haron Wachira to refurbish the Thunguri Coffee washing station. Despite challenges, including adverse weather and financial hurdles, the Carlsons remain committed to creating high-quality coffee and building meaningful relationships with farmers and roasters. Their journey, from college barista days to leading a major coffee enterprise, underscores a passion for coffee that goes beyond the bean—focusing on community and sustainability. This year marks their first export of green coffees from Western Kenya, indicating a promising new chapter for Long Miles Coffee.
